  • World War I - Western Front Association   27 weeks 18 hours ago

I don't know - world war one has lots of programs/documentaries/literature - it's just not a ratings winner.

That and the fact that the "Great War" is always documented with a stiff upper lip feeling - making it feel out dated and stale.

Generally modern/post-modern thought doesn't like war, and I have seen very few broadcasts about WW1 that take this stance (more are on WW2).

I think the only thing that I have seen in recent years that looked at WW1 with a more human touch (albeit highly romanticised) was "Un long dimanche de fiançailles".

This sort of thing is what people need to make them relate more to the period and make them seek out the awful, ghastly and horrifying truth that was WW1.

Thank god for the arrival of Emma - Reuters have been reporting sightings of misplaced Grenadier Guardsmen in the South Western area of France.

And please pass on our congratulations to Molly. Presumably her staff discount will enable you to resume your cross dressing hobby resplendent in Sophie's jewellery as well, c'est magnifique.... ;-)

Nice one - it is gathering momentum. The chap who set it up and I had a brief e-mail exchange - he's overwhelmed by the response.

  • British Airways asks staff to work for nothing   1 year 5 weeks ago

Well it all depends on how you choose to measure competency.  If lining your own pocket and making bumper profits for shareholders is a mark of competency then BA have delivered in spades.

Over the last two years, BA made around £900m profit one year and £500m the other.  In the 12 months ending 31 March 2006, operating profit was £705m, which topped market expectations, up 21% on the previous year.  And for the last 9 months of 2007 pre-tax profits came in at £788m, up 34.9% from the same period of 2006.  In the year up to 31 March 2008 BA reported a 45% rise in annual profits of £883m.

One would have thought that putting something away for the much forecasted rainy day would have been prudent.  But no, faced with declining passenger numbers, rising fuel costs, colluding on passenger and cargo flight pricing, the Terminal 5 debacle and world economic melt down BA Chief Executive Willie Walsh pocketed an inflation busting 6% pay rise including benefits plus a top up to his pension fund of £90,000.

In my view BALPA are a disgrace to their members and the trade union movement.  Those agreeing to work without pay will save 0.5% of the airlines employment costs.  Given the size of BA’s cost base this will do little if nothing to alleviate the company’s current financial position.

When the inevitable attacks to terms and conditions, pay cuts, compulsory redundancies and pension scheme closures come there will be little comfort to be had for those who have followed their Chief Executives ‘work without pay’ gimmick.

  • Flyers face losing their Airmiles   1 year 20 weeks ago

Banks - they want it every way they can.  Thieves the lot of them.  Mind you, as a tax payer you'll own them all soon.

  • Flyers face losing their Airmiles   1 year 20 weeks ago

As a Natwest account holder I used to receive Airmiles for spending on my credit card.  At some point Airmiles and Natwest had a lovers tiff and becuase I didn't want to open an account with their new flame Lloyds TSB that was the end of that.  Yesterday I received notice that my account will close at the end of Sept this year unless I "start collecting miles again".  The other gem in the small print is that "a £30 admin fee applies if you haven't had any Airmiles added to your account in the 12 months before booking".  Nice touch.....

Dear 'Member' thank you for this clarification.  As you rightly say the level of concern was global in magnitude.  Our servers have been inundated with messages of good will and sympathy.  Now that the an explanatory note has been issued everyone can breath a huge sigh of relief, and our servers can take the rest of the day off.

For the sake of clarity - as I know there are thousands of concerned readers out there - I only have the one on the right Lyctus brunneus.  The other critter I am acquainted with Phymatodes testaceus is not pictured.  And that's testaceus NOT testiculus...
